Introduction to Game Development

Game Maker is a compete development tool for making 2D games. It’s also the ideal platform for beginner programmers as games can be pieced together visually (by combining built-in components and setting their properties), but code can also be written to extend the functionality of your game.

We will explore the concepts of game construction through the creation of some simple games that the students can customise (and play). Along the way, we will explore:

  • The Game Maker interface and development process
  • Game play design
  • Construction of game elements
  • Implementation of game logic

This course would be ideal for children who want to quickly create something they can play, and then learn additional coding to extend the game play.

Best suited to younger students (under 13), but also ideal for older students with no game development experience.

  • Each student will require their own laptop (Mac, Linux or Windows) with at least 4MB RAM
  • Free Game Maker account - sign up at Note that the free account will be sufficient for this course.
  • Game Maker software installed on the laptop. The Game Maker software is available for free download when you create your Game Maker account
